Built in the early 20th century by the Japanese, and restored to its original glory in 2010, the Honji Grand Stage is a palatial multi-disciplinary arts space and banquet hall to showcase the finest in Chinese theater and culinary arts. The intricate stage of carved wood and stone is an appropriately dramatic host to the opera, martial arts, contortionist, and folk-art performances held here.

Ship-shape rows of New England-inspired Victorian townhouses in a rainbow of colors sit gazing out towards the placid harbor of Tiger Bay. Stroll the promenade to a lighthouse modeled after the Bremen Port Lighthouse in Germany, and watch as fisherman in traditional boats unload their nets. Feast on the day’s fresh catch at one of the waterfront seafood restaurants in this tidy wharf.

Lushun Art Museum

Nearly a century old, the Lushun Museum is home to a trove of both historical and local cultural relics from the Liaoning Province and beyond. Rare bronze pieces, lacquerware, ancient coins, fine paintings, and Chinese calligraphy are carefully laid out in this neoclassical building. Some of the most impressive artifacts in the collection include nine mummies thought to be over 1,000 years old.

Lacy ironwork crowns the green dome of a yellow brick building. Its distinctive architectural style harks back to the early 20th century when Russia occupied Dalian. Along this historic row, market stalls selling long strands of luminous pearls sit next to others stacked with colorful groups of Matryoshka dolls. Leading to the former city hall, a grand building dating from the turn of the last century, Russian Street offers a vibrant peek into Dalian’s past.
