ON CHINA’S CENTRAL COAST, SHOWSTOPPING SHANGHAI IS THE COUNTRY’S BIGGEST CITY AND A GLOBAL FINANCIAL CENTER.

Shanghai buzzes with a palpable electricity. The city is unabashedly forward-looking, but colonial elegance and style remain part of city life, as do splendid temples and parks. The city lures the adventurous with its energy, and local contemporary artists have made Shanghai a fine art capital.

The charming pedestrian district of Xintiandi offers a tranquil counterpoint to Shanghai’s lively pace. Historic black and red brick houses have been converted to distinctive boutiques and small museums, while cafes encourage leisurely people-watching. Picturesque narrow lanes beckon exploration. Rapid modernization has spelled the loss of much heritage architecture, so the deliberate preservation of Xintiandi’s cosmopolitan oasis is particularly welcome.
