ESCHER IN HET PALEIS

Explore the work and life of Dutch artist M.C. Escher, known for his detailed graphic art, mathematically inspired woodcuts and fine lithographs. A collection of over 150 prints, including the mind-bogglingly large woodcut Metamorphosis III, housed in the former WInter Palace of Queen Mother Emma of the Netherlands. Step into an Escher-like experiential exhibit and unravel some of his optical illusions thought interactive puzzle-like exhibits.

LANGE VOORHOUT

The neighborhood surrounding the hotel is home to some of the most desirable addresses in the city. Wander through the L-shaped Lange Voorhout, a leafy enclave with impressive rows of 100-year old private homes and embassy buildings. Hunt and peck for antiques, rare books, prints and decorative items in the popular antique and book market held Thursday during summer and on Sundays during the winter.

MAURITSHUIS ART GALLERY

Johannes Vermeer’s world-renowned “Girl With a Pearl Earring” is a masterpiece that has inspired literature and film, and it’s just one of the many treasures found inside this trove of European art. Housed within a stunning 17th century palace, an exceptional collection of nearly eight hundred works includes inspiring canvases by Rembrandt, Rubens, Jan Steen, and Paulus Potter. An enchanting cache of miniatures depicts French, Dutch, and British royals.

MUSEUM BEELDEN AAN ZEE

Founded in 1994 by sculpture collectors Theo and Lida Scholten, this is the only Dutch museum that features sculpture exclusively. Designed by Dutch architect Wim Quist, the low lying concrete building appears to emerge from the sand dunes. The works of of a who’s who of international contemporary artists is on display within the museum and in the outdoor garden.

PEACE PALACE

It is only fitting that the principal judicial body of the United Nations is house in an impressive Neo-Renaissance building with a massive carillon and clock tower. Roam these halls of justice on a guided tour of the buildings and gardens, the construction of which was funded in part by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie.
