With over two hundred years of vibrant history, Opens in a new windowThe Equinox, a Luxury Collection Golf Resort & Spa, Vermont has held various names—at different points in time, the property has been called Marsh Tavern, Thaddeus Munson’s New Inn, Widow Black’s Inn, and Vanderlip’s Hotel, just to name a few.
The hotel has been honored to welcome four United States presidents, acting as a vacation spot for Presidents William Howard Taft, Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and Benjamin Harrison, all of whom have stayed at the hotel since its founding in 1853. In fact, Roosevelt delivered a campaign speech on the hotel’s main lawn while on the campaign trail.
The Equinox as we know it reopened in 1982 after an extensive 18-month renovation. The construction revealed a number of old secrets hidden in the hotel walls, such as a concealed passageway that connected two rooms in different parts of the main building—the kind of timeless secret that causes the imagination to run wild with “what if’s.” We might never know who the tunnel was designed for, or with what intentions, but thinking back on the influential figures who have briefly called The Equinox home over the years, we can perhaps make a few guesses.
