Margherita Maccapani Missoni’s Paros Getaway

Margherita Maccapani Missoni–entrepreneur, creator, model and scion of the House of Missoni, the Italian ready-to-wear and home label–knows well the Mediterranean good life. From her sun-spritzed summer home on Sardinia to a recent trip to Opens in a new windowCosme, a Luxury Collection Resort, Paros, Maccapani Missoni finds creative sparks at every port and with every story, which bolsters her artistic process–from acting to interior design, and more.

“The first place I go for inspiration is the markets,” says Maccapani Missoni, which is perhaps not surprising, given her sartorial eye. “I think markets are one of the best ways to really understand where you are. And they’re a great place to find a keepsake that won’t necessarily be in the souvenir shops.” In Paros, she particularly appreciated vintage, 1960’s -era clothing and textiles she found while exploring.

Maccapani Missoni visited Cosme with two of her best friends, Eugenie Niarchos and Tatiana Santo Domingo. “We had all these different experiences around our different passions,” she says. “From Greek food at the hotel’s amazing restaurant Opens in a new windowParostià to excursions to learn about Paros’ history, it was extraordinary.” So fun, in fact, that when she returned to Italy, she was wiped out by the bliss of it all. “My sides were literally sore from laughing too hard with my friends at dinner. I couldn’t stop, the entire trip! The mood at Cosme was conducive to checking out from reality for a bit. It’s the kind of place where you feel free. Where you feel happy.”

There was a catharsis apparent in visiting Paros, too. “I couldn’t travel in depth for a while because, first, I was in the early years of motherhood, and then the pandemic hit. I really need to travel to help develop my ideas,” says Maccapani Missoni. “You never know when something is going to hit you later on.”
Maccapani Missoni recalls moments and takeaways from her travels that have stayed with her over the years, both physically and as touchpoints for her imagination and her work. “For example, I have these sarongs from Bali, I think I got them when I was 20 years old. They’re always with me, and they’ve directly inspired some of my designs. I also have a pair of silver hoops from Bolivi a that have broken a few times, but I keep getting them repaired.”

Beyond inspiration, travel fills such an important place in Maccapani Missoni’s life. She adds: “Traveling is a conduit to finding things that have a reason to be in your life, and in your memories. I cannot emphasize how important this is for creativity. There’s no substitute.”

As for Cosme–and the inspiration and vibe set by Paros’ stark white walls, pure blue horizons and soft pink walls of flowers–Maccapani Missoni concludes, with a wink: “Some of the outfits we wore during that trip may return, with a Grecian flare, in one of our collections later on.”
